Mababe Summary

The Mababe is a vast and mysterious wildlife haven.

Very little was known about this region until it exploded onto the safari scene in early 2024. The Mababe wilderness area is huge and straddles the Khwai region and the Savuti Marsh. Between these 2 regions for many many miles there is no permanent sources of water, except for the Mababe wetlands area. The Mababe Wetlands therefore attracts a vast array of massive herds including migrating herds of zebra, arguably the largest herds of buffalo in Africa. Along with big herds of elephant and plains game.

What Africa Uncovered says…

The Mababe is unique, enthralling and another gem of a safari destination in Botswana. Where possible Mababe should be included on any Botswana safari itinerary as the safari experience at Mababe is outstanding.

The Mababe consists of Mopane woodlands, open grasslands and wetlands.

Three very diverse areas which in turn support a wide variety of wildlife. Whilst kudu, roan, leopards and wild dogs favour the Mopane woodlands, the open Serengeti-like grasslands provide ample feeding for antelope, zebra, buffalo which in turn attracts large lion prides as well as cheetah and hyena

Wildlife in the Mababe

With the region being so dry with not many permanent water sources around, the focal point is the wetland area. Massive herds of buffalo and elephant congregate in the wetlands area of Mababe to quench their thirst. The lion prides are all too aware of this and a lot of the lion and buffalo interaction occurs in or near to the wetlands area.
