Mpumalanga is the province situated in the north east of South Africa, and in which lies the Kruger National Park, the world’s largest game reserve and one of the best safari destinations on the planet. This massive game reserve stretches almost 350 Km along South Africa’s eastern border with Mozambique. Wildlife within the Kruger National Park is unrivalled as there are over 500 species of bird, and over 140 mammal species including nearly 2,000 Lion, over 9,000 Elephant, 25,000 Buffalo, and over 3,000 Black and White Rhino.
The Kruger National Park covers so vast an area, that the northern and southern reaches of the park are quite different. The far north of the park is the wildest and most difficult area to access, it is also drier and hotter than the south. The central and southern parts of the Kruger Park are far more accessible, with a good network of roads, and therefore also have the best facilities for visitors.

Along the western border of the Kruger National Park, lie a number of Private Game Reserves. Much of the fencing that once existed between the Kruger Park and the Private Reserves has been removed, allowing the wildlife to roam freely in and out of the Private Reserves. These Private Reserves are about the best in the country for high quality game viewing, as unlike in the Kruger Park, night driving and off road driving is allowed. This allows for excellent game viewing, as the rangers/trackers are allowed to follow the animals wherever they roam, allowing their guests to get very close to the animals and witness them undisturbed in their natural environment.
Unlike in the Kruger National Park, in the Private Reserves, day and night game drives are conducted in open vehicles, this allows for a far better safari experience, as not only is the viewing better, but one also gets to feel as though you are one with your surroundings. In the Private Reserves, the game drives are conducted by trained rangers, who work closely with a local tracker, to help in finding the animals that you want to see. All you have to do is sit back in a comfortable open top 4×4, and marvel at the magnificence of wild Africa. With some of the finest safari lodges in Africa, the accommodation in the private game reserves is excellent, with food and the level of service outstanding.
