Fundu Lagoon – Additional Diving Information
The following has been resourced from published dive guide information for Pemba, our own local knowledge of the waters and weather patterns and medical advice from DAN.
Climate
December to March sees mainly hot dry weather, June to October are traditionally cool and dry (circa 25’c). The rainy season arrives in April to May although this may be early or late and as a result may effect the months before or after. November also experiences sporadic heavy rain.
Water Temperature / Visibility
Early in the season (June) the temperature is 24’c and this rises over the season with improving weather. On average the temperature is between 27—28 ‘c. The Dive Centre is stocked with 3mm full length wetsuits which are commensurate for these waters. Average visibility ranges from 20—40 metres with the best viz later in the season. High tide produces the best viz on a daily basis and as the majority of the diving is wall dives along pristine hard coral the viz in general is rarely disappointing.
Best Diving Months
October through to March. Outside of these months sea conditions can be rough which results in some visibility deterioration. December to February is seen as the best time for Manta Rays and August the best time to see migrating Humpback Wales.
The Diving
Is predominantly drift / wall diving. On their day our dive sites offer of the most exhilarating drift diving in East Africa with the regular sightings of schooling barracuda, giant trevallies, napolean wrasse, huge groupers, turtles, bluespotted / blotched fantail / Eagle / Manta rays. All set against the back drop of mile upon mile of pristine hard coral proliferated by all the usual reef fish in their ‘000’s. We even get the odd shark.
Diving is done from one or both (to keep group sizes small) of our ‘big yellows’, ex Royal Marines landing craft. Powered by two 115 hp outboard engines they make excellent dive boats and are the fastest boats on Pemba.
Dive Insurance & Anti Malarial Drugs
To dive with us you will be required to have travel insurance that covers scuba diving. Alternatively dive insurance can be bought locally from the Divers Alert Network (DAN) – $15 for 5 days cover although this can take 48hrs to put in place. Also on the medical advice of the DAN organization we do not allow guests to dive if they are using Larium as an anti-malarial.
