Mahale National Park is one of the most remote and most beautiful national parks in the whole of Africa. Situated in the remote West, Mahale National Park lies on the eastern shore of the great Lake Tanganyika. The forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains rise behind camp, home to the world’s largest known population of chimpanzees.
At Mahale the evergreen forested slopes plunge from the peaks to the shoreline, where perfect white sand beaches line the near perfect shoreline of the famous gin clear lake. The park is located about half way down the Eastern shore of the enormous Lake Tanganyika. There are no roads running into the park and the only access is by boat along the lake or by light aircraft. All safaris inside the park are on foot through the forests. Mahale is quite simply the best location in the world for viewing chimpanzee in the wild.
Mahale is an incredibly remote and little visited place. In 2001 the total number of visitors to the park was 147, as compared with over 100,000 in the Serengeti. Mahale Mountains is also one of the best beach locations in the world, with superb swimming, sailing, snorkelling and fishing.
