CAMP DESCRIPTION

Susuwe Island Lodge Aerial

Set on the remote Birre Island in the Kwando River, the Susuwe Island Lodge lies in the spectacular Bwabwata National Park in North-eastern Namibia. Tall riverine trees cast their protective shadow across the lodge during hot African summers, overlooking the fertile river floodplains. An African river, a spectacular canopy of ancient indigenous trees and ancient vistas across the Kalahari grasslands are the inheritance of the animals that roam here and the scattered bands of people who reside alongside them.

6 Spacious brick and thatch suites equipped with double bathroom, bedroom, lounge and wooden viewing deck each with private plunge pool offer our visitors the opportunity to merge unhurriedly with Africa’s timeless evolution of hazy days and star-studded nights. Mosquito nets, overhead fans and hairdryers as well as generated electricity are provided. Susuwe Island Lodge is built to incorporate the riverine forest – the main complex has lofty canopy viewing decks overlooking endless savannahs, glistening lily-studded wetlands and ancient Kalahari woodlands, as well as a bouma, spacious lounge and dining areas, curio shop and small reference library.

ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE

Susuwe Island Lodge Boat

The rivers and floodplains are host to a horde of animal and bird life untouched by modern tourism. Huge herds of Elephant follow ancient migratory paths as their forebears once did, moving as softly as the clouds of dust that announce their presence. Wallowing Hippo, proud Lion, rare Puku and shy Chobe Bushbuck are just some of the animals that make the area their home. From the grassy savannahs to the towering Baobab, from the water’s edge to the unfolding plains, this is untouched Africa at its most essential.

At Susuwe, game drives are conducted in the Bwabwata National Park. Game sightings in this cradle of rivers could include vast herds of roaming Elephant and Buffalo, Lion, Hippo, Leopard, Sable, Roan, Lechwe and Puku for example. Night drives at Susuwe offer an even closer insight into the intrigue of the African bush.
